COG has a unique position in the London music scene. No other essentially amateur musical organisation plays operas regularly to such good halls on the South Bank and is watched with such interest by the profession. The Group has frequently led the way in dusting down the unjustifiably neglected, with the COG performance leading to a production by one of the major companies.

COG does not receive grants. The Group survives by a combination of box office income, fees earned by the orchestra for outside dates, subscriptions and some welcome donations.
